FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 15, 2007
NORTHWESTERN FRESHMEN, TRANSFERS TO GATHER SATURDAY FOR ORIENTATION
All freshmen and transfer students entering Northwestern Oklahoma State University for the fall semester, which begins Monday, will be taking part in Orientation 2007 events Saturday. Many students made their way to campus earlier in the week to get their dorm rooms ready and participate in extracurricular college activities such as band, soccer and football.
All Freshman Orientation activities will kick off in Herod Hall Auditorium with registration taking place from 8 to 8:30 a.m., and transfers will meet from 1 to 2 p.m., also in the auditorium.
The freshmen will be welcomed to campus at 8:30 a.m. by Brad Franz, dean of student affairs and enrollment management.
“We are very excited to have these freshmen joining our student body this year as in years past,” Franz said. “We have an exciting day ready for them, and I know it will be helpful for them as they start their journey as a Ranger. We have added some things to the event we hope will add to their first experience as a Northwestern student. Alysson Tucker [director of student life and counseling services] has done another excellent job in readying the event.”
To get things really going Saturday morning, the Ranger cheerleaders and football team will teach these new Rangers a few cheers and the school’s fight song, “Ride, Rangers, Ride.” The Ranger band, which has been on campus this week in rehearsals for marching season, also will perform during the event.
Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, will speak to the students and many of the university’s staff members, Ranger Connectors and Northwestern Student Ambassadors will be introduced.
From 9 to 11:20 a.m. freshmen will take part in various “breakout” sessions where they will have their student IDs made, get parking decals, and visit with a faculty member about the differences between high school and college and what to expect from their college professors and classes. Students also will visit with current Northwestern students to ask questions about college life and what to expect, have a short orientation at the J.W. Holder Wellness Center and have individual school group photos taken.
Campus clubs and organizations from throughout campus will have booths set up during this time in the Student Center commons area so all students can learn of the many organizations they will have a chance to join.
Following those sessions, the entire class will gather on the lawn near the Student Center to have the traditional freshman class photo taken.
As soon as this photo has been taken, students will re-assemble in the auditorium for a special presentation called “The Ultimate Road Trip, Campus2Career,” put on by Monster.com, which will touch upon some of the things they can expect as college students and young adults, like the importance of studying, being prepared for class and getting involved in their college experience.
Transfer students attending their orientation session will be given information about receiving their Northwestern e-mail accounts, the Student Information System, transcripts, IDs and parking decals, a short wellness center orientation, among other topics. Transfer students also are encouraged to visit the student clubs and organizations in the Student Center commons area from 9 to 11:20 a.m.
Optional campus tours for freshmen and transfers will begin in Fine Arts, room 117, at 2 p.m.
