NEW WOODS COUNTY VISITORS CENTER LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER HELP

The newly created Woods County Visitor’s Center located within walking distance of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva campus is looking for a few good volunteers.

Alexandra Mantz, Alva Chamber of Commerce director, is working with the Woods County Economic Development Committee in coming up with enough volunteers to staff the center.

The new center, located at 512 Oklahoma Blvd., opened Feb. 1 with enough seniors from the community volunteering to have it open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the month, but more volunteers are needed, which could be a great opportunity for Northwestern students.

“We are looking for students with working knowledge of northwest Oklahoma,” Mantz said. “If we cannot find students with this knowledge, we will train volunteers.”

Mantz also said that students volunteering at the center would be provided with valuable internship experience, as well as helping them to build a resume. If students need to have internship paperwork filled out, Mantz said they can do this as well.

Mantz noted that current plans include having the center open later during the summer months and as the days get longer.

The center will provide maps of Oklahoma, as well as brochures and pamphlets about northwest Oklahoma including such tourist attractions as the Little Sahara State Park near Waynoka, Alabaster Caverns State Park near Freedom and the Great Salt Plains State Park near Cherokee.

Anyone interested in volunteering to work at the center should contact the chamber office at (580) 327-1647.
