FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 24, 2006
NORTHWESTERN STUDENTS PLAN HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES
A special set of events just for Northwestern Oklahoma State University students is scheduled in conjunction with the university’s homecoming celebration and will feature several new contests.
The week kicks off on Monday with a cookout and volleyball tournament at the volleyball pit near Coronado Hall. The Rowdy Rangers' cookout begins at 5 p.m. and the tournament at 6 p.m. Teams need to be registered with the Student Services Office by 5 p.m. Thursday. Entry forms are available online at www.nwosu.edu/homecmg/students/ or from Daresa Poe in FA 126. Cash prizes of $100 for first place and $50 for second will be awarded.
On Tuesday (Halloween), sandwich board and costume contests, new this year, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For the sandwich board contest, members of each student organization entered need to make and wear a sandwich board promoting homecoming from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be soliciting donations and the group raising the most money will receive 50 percent of the amount raised by all entrants as a prize. Entries for this contest closed Wednesday.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to enter the costume contest. Each person must go to the Student Services Office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and have a digital photograph taken. The pictured costumes then will be judged and a cash prize awarded to the best student costume and the best faculty/staff costume.
Glow bowling will take place on Wednesday from 10 p.m. to midnight at Cookie’s Bowl and Café. Students can bowl free with a valid Northwestern student ID card. The café will be open during that time.
Another new event is the spirit dance competition at 7 p.m. Thursday in Percefull Fieldhouse. Organizations need to enter no later than 5 p.m. today in the Student Services Office. Each organization’s dance team must consist of official members of the organization and have no more than two current Ranger cheerleaders. The five-minute routine must promote Ranger pride and Northwestern spirit. The winning organization will receive $150 and the People’s Choice will receive $75.
Friday’s activities begin with a pep rally at 10:45 a.m. by the fountain in front of J.W. Martin Library. It will feature the cheerleading squad, Ranger band and football coaches and players. Everyone is invited to attend.
A karaoke contest, another new event, will be at 8 p.m. in the Ranger Perk. Participants can sign up beginning at 7:45 p.m. in the Perk. The winner will receive $75 and People’s Choice will get $25. Refreshments will be provided.
The events were arranged by a student committee coordinated by Alysson Tucker, director of Student Life and Counseling Services; Mistie Kline, director of the Academic Success Center; and Daresa Poe, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management secretary.
