FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 19, 2007
THREE HUMANITIES SHORT COURSES OFFERED AT NORTHWESTERN
Three one-credit hour short courses in humanities are being offered at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in February and March.
“Aspects of American Art” will be taught by adjunct instructor Ken Kelsey on three consecutive Saturdays, Feb. 10, 17 and 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in room E126 at Northwestern’s Enid campus. Students interested in this class must enroll in HUMN 4480 with the key number 2E958 by Jan. 22.
Kelsey said that the purpose of this class is to connect people to American art and enable them to appreciate it more deeply. He added that class members will view art, discuss it, and also submit a written report after analyzing a piece of art.
For additional information, please contact Kelsey at (580) 603-0103 or kdkelsey@nwosu.edu.
“African-American/Black History: Understanding the past, living today, creating the future” will be taught by Dr. Deena Fisher, Woodward campus dean, Feb. 1-28.
“Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams” will be taught by Dr. Cheryl Evans, Enid campus dean, March 1-30.
Both courses are being offered by arrangement to students in Alva, Enid and Woodward. Students interested should enroll prior to the first day of class and contact the professor for a syllabus and additional information. Fisher can be reached at (580) 256-0049 or dkfisher@nwosu.edu with Evans at (580) 213-3105 or clevans@nwosu.edu.
In the Black History course, Fisher said that students will be required to read, then write a book review of “A Matter of Black and White: The Autobiography of Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher,” who is the first African-American to attend the University of Oklahoma Law School. She also has a Supreme Court Case named after her.
A number of Black History Month activities also are scheduled throughout the month with all being free and open to the public. All students enrolled in the class will be expected to attend these events.
Black History Month activities scheduled at Northwestern include the following:
· Feb. 1 – Posters and displays over Black History Month at all campus locations;
· Feb. 6 – The film presentation of “Glory Road”, 6:30 p.m., Woodward Campus student commons area, Enid Boardroom, and Alva’s Ranger Perk.
· Feb. 20 – A lecture by Bruce Fisher, curator of African-American Culture Studies for the Oklahoma Historical Society titled “African-Americans in Oklahoma.” This event will start at 6:35 p.m. and originate from room 218 on the Enid campus. It will be broadcast via ITV to room 131 of the Industrial Education building in Alva and Studio D in Woodward. Bruce Fisher is the son of the woman the class members will be reading about.
Dr. Fisher also said that plans currently are underway with Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, director of bands at Northwestern, to have a jazz concert titled “An Evening of Jazz: In Honor of Black History Month,” at the Alva and Enid campuses during the month of February.
For the Women’s History course, Evans said the focus will be on the contributions of women in politics who made a difference for Oklahoma communities. The woman to be studied is Kate Barnard, the first woman in Oklahoma to be elected to a public office, even before women had the right to vote.
Students in the class will be required to read “One Woman’s Political Journey: Kate Barnard and Social Reform, 1875-1930” prior to the start of the class in March. Students also will write a report about this book, as well as attend all Women’s History events, which currently are being scheduled.
Students should enroll soon in HUMN 4480 using the appropriate campus key numbers. Those key numbers and other class information can be obtained from each professor, as well as on the Northwestern web site at www.nwosu.edu/schedule under the Updated Course Schedules link. The courses can be found using Spring 2007 Undergraduate and choosing Humanities.
