SEVEN TO COMPETE FOR THE TITLE OF MISS NORTHWESTERN
Northwestern Oklahoma State University will play host to the annual Miss Northwestern pageant on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Herod Hall Auditorium. Seven women will vie for the title that evening. Tickets at the door are $8, but tickets purchased in advance are $6. Advanced tickets can be purchased by calling pageant director Misti Knopf at (580) 327-8194 or by contacting one of the contestants. Admission is free to all Northwestern students with a current school ID.
Competing for the title, currently held by Elizabeth Harris of Seiling, are Allison Cunningham, Jordi Curtis, Amanda Decker, Kasey Fowler, Jordan Gaskill, Angela Gregg and Amy Hook.

Cunningham is an Alva sophomore majoring in mass communications. She is a member of Student Government Association, a staff reporter for the Northwestern News and has a leading role in the upcoming play, “The Shape of Things.” In the future, she’d like to pursue a master’s degree and work for a non-profit agency or company as a public relations representative. Her talent will include the piano solo “Nocturne in E-flat Major.” Her platform is “Exercising for the Elderly,” in which she emphasizes the importance of exercise for senior citizens.
Curtis is a Laverne junior majoring in biology and the current president of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She is a volunteer member of the Healthy and Fit School Advisory Committee, and an employee at Alva State Bank. In the future, Curtis would like to obtain a physical therapy degree. Her talent will include a vocal/dance solo to “All That Jazz.” Her platform is “Generation XXL” where she will increase the awareness of childhood obesity in Oklahoma and encourage communities to engage in healthy lifestyles.
Decker is a Waynoka sophomore majoring in business management. She is a member of the Northwestern Chorale, and is a past Miss Cinderella contestant where she was first runner-up, as well as the talent and interview winner. In the future, Decker plans to graduate and become a professional singer and songwriter. For her talent, she will perform a vocal solo titled “I’m Gonna Take That Mountain.” Her platform is “Restoring Music Education in America’s Public Schools,” and keeping everyone knowledgeable about the importance of music education in the school systems.
Fowler is a Mesa, Ariz., junior majoring in mass communications. She is a member of Red and Black Honor Scroll, Cardinal Key Honor Society and was a member of the university marching band. In the future, Fowler would like to work for a newspaper as a writer and photographer. She will be performing an alto saxophone solo to “Castle on a Cloud” from “Les Miserables.” Her platform issue deals with Locks of Love to raise awareness of the organization that provides hairpieces for children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Gaskill is a Waynoka freshman majoring in pre-med/biology. She is the 2006 Northwestern Freshman Queen, a member of the Lady Ranger basketball team and a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. In the future, she plans to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. Gaskill will perform a vocal solo to “Summertime.” Her platform is “Engaging Education and Communities: Moving Individuals to Serve,” promoting activities involving children, education and the community.
Gregg is an Alva sophomore majoring in elementary education. She is vice president of recruitment for Delta Zeta sorority and is a dance instructor at CH Dance Productions. She also was a counselor at Show Choir Camps of America. In the future Gregg would like to attend graduate school and become a teacher. She will perform a self-choreographed song and dance to “Roxie” from “Chicago.” Her platform issue is “Adoption Awareness.” She will urge open adoptions and will explain how beneficial it is.
Hook is an Alva sophomore majoring in music education. She is the university band assistant and percussion section leader. She currently is the Kappa Kappa Psi secretary and Phi Delta band historian. In the future, Hook would like to obtain a master’s degree in music therapy and work with children with special needs. Her talent will include a marimba solo called “Dance for Marimba.” Her platform is “Promoting Blood Donation,” and will explain the importance of donating blood when people are young.
In addition to the talent portion of the pageant, the contestants will also compete in evening wear, interview and fitness in a swimsuit. The winner of the Miss Northwestern pageant will compete June 4-10 in Tulsa at the Miss Oklahoma pageant. She also will receive a $1,500 tuition scholarship and a $500 cash scholarship. First runner-up will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship and a $200 cash scholarship, and the second runner-up will receive a $500 tuition scholarship, as well as a $100 cash scholarship.
