NORTHWESTERN MUSICIANS PLAYING WITH AREA HIGH SCHOOL BANDS

Members of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University “Spirit of Northwest Oklahoma” marching band have been traveling to area high school football games to play with the home team’s band.

Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, director of bands, said about 10 Northwestern students have been traveling to different schools where they perform with some of the smaller schools’ bands during the football games.

“It helps young band members get an idea of what being part of a larger band sounds and feels like, which in turn may help the band directors in those schools to recruit more players for their program,” Lindberg said.

“It also helps our music education majors as they are able to observe first hand what it is like to run a band during a game and gives them a great variety of observation hours that are required in their education courses,” she added. “And, of course, it is great opportunity for us to recruit future members of the Ranger band.”

“This has been a great experience for all,” Lindberg said. “The Ranger band students have had a blast doing this and we are showing that band is FUN!”

The Northwestern band members will be in Fairview this Friday and in Buffalo on Oct. 13. They already have visited Deer Creek-Lamont, Alva, Cherokee and Covington-Douglas.
