CUNNINGHAM NAMED ALVA’S CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

            Dr. Janet Cunningham, president of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, was named Alva’s Citizen of the Year during an awards ceremony Nov. 13 hosted by the Alva Chamber of Commerce.

            Cunningham was lauded for her service to the community, the Alva Public Schools and Northwestern.

            “I am truly honored because I know there are so many people who are deserving of this recognition,” she said. “This is special because this is my hometown and I am extremely proud of the Alva community.”

            Selected as the 19th president of Northwestern in June, Cunningham has been a leader in civic affairs, serving on the executive boards of the Woods County Economic Development Committee and the Alva Chamber of Commerce. She also is a member of the Alva Kiwanis Club.

            Cunningham also has devoted much time to activities associated with the Alva school system, including the Parent-Teacher Organization, Electric Gold Booster Club, Speech Booster Club and the Alva Cardinal baseball team.

            Cunningham and her husband, Rick, have four children – Bret, Allison, Tanner and Drew.
