HIGH SCHOOL BAND MEMBERS VISIT NORTHWESTERN FOR FUN DAY
Twenty musicians from Alva, Cherokee and Okeene high schools were at Northwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday, Sept. 30, for a band “fun day.” The occasion was sponsored by the newly formed chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi (KKP), a national honorary band fraternity.
“After our first Ranger band trip to Deer Creek-Lamont High School, some members of KKP thought it would be fun to invite area high school band members to a ‘fun day’ on campus,” said Yvonne Colle-Burden, president of the chapter. She is a senior instrumental music major from Medicine Lodge.
“The recent fun day was KKP’s first service project to get high school band students to the Northwestern campus to interact with our band members and to have a great time,” Colle-Burden said.
The visitors received T-shirts, ate at the Family Day cookout compliments of the Rowdy Rangers and played with the Northwestern band during the football game.
PPK promotes the advancement of college and university bands through service and support to bands, comprehensive education, leadership opportunities and recognition. It was founded at Oklahoma State University in 1919 and prominent members have included John Phillip Sousa, Count Basie, Lawrence Welk, astronaut Neil Armstrong and former President Bill Clinton. It currently has chapters at more than 150 colleges and universities.
