WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS LEARN TO NAVIGATE AMERICAN MEMORY SITE

Participants in a recent workshop presented by the Government Documents Department of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Libraries, along with the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, learned some of the most effective methods of searching within the American Memory web site.

Steve Beleu, instructor of the American Memory workshop, is pictured with some of the participants: Pam Davidson, Alva campus library, Randall Peters, Enid campus library, and Neil Bachman of Alva.

The web site, which is under the auspices of the Library of Congress, consists of nine million items grouped into more than 100 collections.

“These collections range from photographs by Ansel Adams to audio recordings of folk music performed in migrant work camps during the Dust Bowl,” said Verna Graybill, government documents librarian. “Special emphasis was placed upon locating resources that are unique to the history of Oklahoma.”

Staff members from both the Alva and Enid campus libraries were participants, as well as Kathy Earnest, instructor of English, and private citizens.

The American Memory collection may be accessed under “Helpful Websites” on the NWOSU Libraries’ main page found under quick links at www.nwosu.edu. Graybill said library staff members also will be glad to assist users with the site.

Steve Beleu, director of the U.S. Government Information Division of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, led the three-hour session.
