FIVE TO BE HONORED AT AAUW WOMEN’S RECOGNITION CEREMONY, DINNER AT NORTHWESTERN

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host its fifth annual Women’s Recognition Ceremony and Dinner honoring women leaders in northwest Oklahoma at 7 p.m., March 13, in the Student Center Ballroom on the campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Five women from northwest Oklahoma will be recognized and honored for their accomplishments and contributions to their communities, churches, businesses and families.  Recipients include Karen Koehn, guidance counselor at Northwest Technology Center in Alva, educational development award; Jane McDermott of McDermott Insurance in Alva, economic development award;  Angelia Case, instructional media technician at Northwestern, cultural development award; and Rev. Judye Pistole, pastor of Alva’s First Presbyterian Church, community development award. 

The final award of “Woman of the Year” will remain secret until the awards ceremony. 

Tickets for the event are $15 and must be purchased by March 2 from any AAUW member or by calling Audra Qualls at (580) 327-8178.

Dr. Janet Cunningham, Northwestern president, will be the emcee for the event, and music faculty member Ling-Yu Kan will provide entertainment.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Cindy Dougherty, dean of students at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Dougherty has been invited to address universities, businesses, churches and civic groups across the country. She has worked with the Zig Ziglar Corporation, the Child Welfare League of America, the Aramark Corporation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, federal and state mental health departments and other organizations. 

She has served as president for the National Benevolent Association as well as dean, vice provost and vice president at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., and Phillips University in Enid.

Dougherty graduated from Phillips University with honors in 1976, with bachelor's degrees in English, mass communications and secondary education. She earned her master's degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1985. She received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Eureka College in 2000.
