FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                      April 11, 2006

NORTHWESTERN’S BATTLE OF THE BANDS TO HIT DOWNTOWN ALVA

            For the first time since 2003, six local bands will compete for the top spot and cash prizes during the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Student Government Association’s Battle of the Bands competition April 20 in downtown Alva. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

            "The event will be fun for everyone and the performing bands are sure to be entertaining,” Eric Wheeler, SGA Vice President, said.  “I would like everyone at Northwestern and the surrounding community to feel free to bring their lawn chairs and blankets out to the square and enjoy themselves at an event that the town has not had in a couple of years."

            The bands will perform music suitable for all ages from 6 to 9 p.m. on the bandstand on the west side of the Woods County Courthouse. The contest takes place following the annual Bahama Breakaway celebration for Northwestern students, also on the downtown square.

            “We have a lot of great bands from the town of Alva, and from NWOSU,” Molly Hill, Battle of the Bands director, said.  “Also, we have a band from Alva High School, so there will be a wide variety of music and many familiar faces.”

            Prize money includes $225 for first place, $150 for second place, $100 for third place and a crowd favorite award of $35.

            The bands, type of music played and members’ names are as follows:

            Lower Middle Class -- Texas country, Terry Floyd, Zach Weiderstein, Bryon White, JD Casteel;

            The Jason Franklin Band -- rock, Jason Franklin, Max Ridgway, Richard Martin, Tony Swafford;
