NORTHWESTERN SYMPHONIC BAND TO PRESENT FREE CONCERT SUNDAY

A rousing mixture of marches by Sousa and King and a mixture of international melodies will comprise the year’s final concert by the Northwestern Oklahoma State University symphonic band.

The performance will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 23, in Herod Hall Auditorium. The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.

Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, Northwestern Oklahoma State University director of bands, conducts a rehearsal of the symphonic band as the group prepares for a free, year-end concert at 3 p.m., Sunday in Herod Hall Auditorium.

Trombone player Adam Treeman, Enid senior, keeps a close eye on his sheet music during a rehearsal for the 3 p.m., Sunday, public concert by the Northwestern Oklahoma State University symphonic band. The concert will be in Herod Hall Auditorium.

Dr. Kathryn Lindberg, director of bands at Northwestern, said the program will feature Curtis Conner, Alva post-graduate student, playing a trumpet solo in “La Virgen de la Macarena” and Kevin Kerr, junior tenor from Conway Springs, Kan., singing an arrangement of “O Danny Boy” with the Trombone Choir.

Senior Mandy Stephens (clarinet) said, “I’m excited about the concert, especially since it will be my last one.”

Stephens will graduate in May with a degree in business administration. She is from Alva.

Cara Bradt (tuba), junior instrumental music education major from Alva, agreed with Stephens’ excitement.

“I’m very excited about the concert because we have some great selections,” she said. “It provides a way to learn something about new cultures and new styles of music without going far away. It’s free and right here on campus.”

Other pieces included in the concert include “Festive Overture” by Shostakovich, “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett and “Gaelforce” by Peter Graham.

“The selections show off every section of the band,” said Yvonne Colle-Burden (trombone), sophomore instrumental music education major from Medicine Lodge, Kan.

“We’re a young band with a lot of freshmen and sophomores and our musical ability has really improved during the year,” said Christine Fry (flute), mass communications junior from Garden City, Kan.

Sunday’s concert marks the end of Lindberg’s first year as band director at Northwestern and she said the experience has been “great.”

“I’ve really enjoyed the past year,” she said. “It is fun to see students evolve while improving their playing ability.”

Lindberg came to Northwestern from Rocky Mountain College in Montana. She said she was surprised at how similar the landscape in northwest Oklahoma is to her home state.

“It’s very similar except for having the Rocky Mountains in the background.”

She hopes everyone will be able to come to Herod Hall Sunday for “a fun afternoon of music!”
