NORTHWESTERN ART SOCIETY ART SHOW APRIL 20-30
WINNERS INVITED TO SHOW PIECES AT RUNNYMEDE HOTEL

            The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society (NAS) is sponsoring its third annual Art Show in the J.W. Martin Library April 20-30, and all university employees and students are encouraged to turn in their entry forms by April 14. The Student Government Association once again is helping to sponsor the show.

            Artwork should be delivered to the J.W. Martin Library in Alva on Monday, April 17, or Tuesday, April 18, 2 to 7 p.m.

            Entrants who are not able to drop off their artwork at this time need to make special arrangements before Friday, April 14.

            Entry forms with rules and categories are available in the Media Center, J.W. Martin Library, the Student Center, Enid Campus Library, Woodward Campus and can be found on the NAS web site at www.nwosu.edu/art.

            Many different types of art work can be entered into the show. The five divisions followed by the categories within that division are:

Painting: oil, acrylic, watercolor;

Graphics: pastel, pencil, pen and ink, mixed media, embossed/etched graphics;

Photography: photography-film, photography-digital, digital art;

Textiles: quilting, needlework, fiber arts; and

3-D/Functional Art: sculpture, designer arts/jewelry, decorative painting, functional art.

            The art work will be on display in the library during normal business hours: 7:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 1 to 10 p.m., Sunday. All art work will be new to this year’s show.

            Ribbons will be awarded to both students and employees; however, only students will be eligible for all cash prizes. Northwestern employees are only eligible for the People’s Choice Cash Award. The People’s Choice Award is based solely on the votes of those viewing the art. These votes will be tabulated on April 26 with the winner being announced that afternoon.

           A cash prize of $50 will be awarded to each student division winner. Each student category winner will receive a cash prize of $15. The People’s Choice Award winner will receive a cash prize of $50, and the Student Best of Show will receive $75.

            New to this year’s show is an additional viewing opportunity for the various winners of the NAS show. An invitation has been extended to NAS for the winning pieces to be shown in the renovated Runnymede Hotel in downtown Alva May 2 and 3.

            During an art society cake fund raiser at a Ranger basketball game, Dr. Ken Brown, retired Northwestern science professor and manager of the Runnymede, asked NAS adviser Angelia Case if it might be possible to have a function of some type at the hotel.

            The two agreed that continuing the annual Northwestern Art Show downtown sounded like a great opportunity to showcase even further the artistic abilities of university employees and students.

            Case said that everyone entering the NAS show will need to sign a “permission slip” allowing NAS to take their art work downtown for the Runnymede show should it happen to win a category and division. A People’s Choice Award of $50 also will be presented to the student or employee whose work receives the most votes from the public during this show.

            The Runnymede show will open on May 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a more formal reception being planned that evening from 7 to 9.

            Brown and Case hope that all artists with pieces on display in the hotel will be able to attend this reception, along with all others interested in viewing the display.

            On May 3, the show will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

            The artists may pick up their work at the close of the show on May 3. Anything not picked up on May 3 can be retrieved on May 4 from 3 to 5 p.m.

            For additional information on the art show, contact Case at (580) 327-8577, arcase@nwosu.edu or visit the NAS web site at www.nwosu.edu/art.
