AG STUDENTS AT NORTHWESTERN FOR FFA INTERSCHOLASTIC CONTEST
Approximately 200 students from some 30 schools in northwest Oklahoma and south central Kansas are expected at Northwestern Oklahoma State University for the FFA Interscholastic Contest on Thursday and Friday, March 30 and 31.
The contest gets underway Thursday afternoon with the first event, the northwest district freshman quiz bowl at 1:30 p.m. in Jesse Dunn. The quiz bowl will be followed by a speech contest at 4 p.m.
Speech divisions include junior and senior parliamentary procedure, 8th grade agriculture exploration, 8th-10th grade general agriculture, 9th grade FFA opportunities, extemporaneous and FFA creed. First place winners in the following six divisions will compete in a public “speak-off” to determine the grand champion speaker: agriculture science, agriculture business, natural resources, animal science, plant science and agriculture policy.
On Friday, the day kicks off with career development contests. They include junior and senior livestock judging, 8:30 a.m., Woods County Fairgrounds; junior and senior land judging, 8:30 a.m., Northwestern farm; ag mechanics, 8:30 a.m., Alva High School; modified crops judging, 9 a.m., Jesse Dunn; farm business management, 9 a.m., Jesse Dunn; ag communications, 10 a.m., Jesse Dunn; entomology, 10 a.m., Jesse Dunn; and food science and technology, 10 a.m., Jesse Dunn.
All contests are open only to FFA members except for livestock judging, which also is open to 4-H members.
Northwestern agriculture department personnel involved in the contest are Dr. Jim Gilchrist, professor of agriculture; Dr. Dean Scarborough, assistant professor of agriculture; and Steve Sneary, farm manager.
They will be assisted by Jack Staats and Randy Nation of Alva High School, Mike Robinson, northwest program specialist with the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technical Education and Barclay Holt of the Northwest Technology Center.
