NORTHWESTERN BROADCAST STUDENTS PLACE WELL AT CONTEST
Twelve Northwestern Oklahoma State University mass communications students placed in nine categories at the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters/Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association Student Day conference in Tulsa on April 1.
The students
won awards for programs they produced in radio, as well as television.
Kayte Anton, Norco, Calif., senior, placed first in three contest categories. She won in Radio Public Service Announcement for “Recycling,” Radio Newscast for “KNSU Newsflash,” and DJ Aircheck for “Top 5 at 5.”
Anton also placed third along with six other students in the Radio Entertainment category for “That’s Unbelievable.” Other students working on this production included Matt Adair, Waynoka junior; Ibrahim Dix, former Northwestern student; Angela Harper, Alva senior; Kiel Hauck, Medicine Lodge, Kan., senior; Phallyn Vaughn, December 2004 graduate from Chester; and Shai Whisenant, May 2004 graduate from Seiling.
Hauck is another multiple category winner. Besides the Radio Entertainment category, he placed first in Radio Magazine/Talk Show for “Ranger Review,” along with Salimar Madera, Los Angeles senior.
Hauck also placed second in Radio Newscast for “Today’s News,” and third in TV Sports Coverage for “Coach Higgins On.”
Northwestern students placed second and third in TV Sports Play-by-Play. Placing second for “Ranger Basketball” are Eric Scott, Woodward junior, and Adam Borth, Arlington, Kan., sophomore, and placing third are Kirt Province, Ashland, Kan., sophomore, and Josh Bellamy, Harper, Kan., sophomore, for “Homecoming.”
Mark Mattheis, instructor in mass communications and NWTV general manager, said that Oklahoma Baptist University took first in play-by-play. He said that OBU’s capabilities to use quality television graphics may have been what it took to edge out the Northwestern entries, but to place second and third in this category is excellent for the students.
“When we realized the first two places in the category were for basketball broadcasts, and third was a football broadcast, we determined that Northwestern had the highest ranked television football production in state of Oklahoma,” Mattheis said.
“My credit goes to the students,” he said. “They put forth the effort to win these awards. I just gave them the avenue to shine.”
Terry Floyd, instructor in mass communications and KNSU Radio adviser, said that overall, he was proud of the students’ accomplishments at this contest.
"I think the students did a great job in the competition this year,” he said. “They worked very hard on their projects and represented themselves and the university well. They won awards against some tough competition from universities all across the state including OU, OSU, OBU and others. I think it shows not only the talent of the students, but also the best of the department."
