FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      September 22, 2004

NORTHWESTERN ART SOCIETY BEGINS FUND RAISER

A new campus club, the Northwestern Art Society (NAS), currently is in the process of raising funds to help defray costs for activities it is planning for the school year.

Certified massage therapist Jamie Kilmer, RN, BSN, of The Wild Hair in downtown Alva has donated a 60 minute full body massage as the club’s first fund raiser. Each ticket is available for a $1 donation. The prize will be given away during the Homecoming football game Saturday, Oct. 2.

“We all know that Homecoming week can be pretty stressful, so this massage could be invaluable to the winner at the end of the week,” said Angelia Case, media center technician and the club’s adviser. “This is very nice of Jamie to donate her time and talent to help out our club.”

Kristy Bauman, NAS president, and Michelle Ross, vice president, will have a booth on the downtown square during the Homecoming parade Oct. 2 for anyone wanting a ticket. Tickets also will be available at the Homecoming football game, as well as through the week on campus in the Instructional Media Center in the basement of Vinson Hall or from any club member.

The club formed last year and was named Student Advocates for the Arts. Bauman said that after the group’s first meeting this semester, they elected to change the name to the Northwestern Art Society to reflect the organization’s desire to promote art and its awareness on Northwestern’s campus. The club’s constitution also has been submitted to Student Services

The group organized the spring semester art show in the library and is hoping to continue it if they’re able to raise the necessary funds.

Case said that the Presidential Partners and the Student Government Association were very helpful to the organization in providing funds for art show prizes

last year. Members of the group would like to be able to fund the art show, as well as

help the club pay for field trips to art museums or for other art-related functions during the year.

“We’re basically starting with a zero dollar budget, so all support for our fund raiser will be greatly appreciated,” Ross said.

Besides the Homecoming booth and fund raising efforts, club members took part in the table decorating contest in the Cibola Room.

Any Northwestern students or employees, who would like to join NAS, may attend the meetings every Wednesday at noon in the media center.
