FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2005
ENDOWMENT BENEFITS NORTHWESTERN’S CHORAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Dennis Weigand, a retired physician, and his
wife Janet, a retired nurse, of Edmond have established The Friends of Choral
Music Endowment with the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation. The
fund is designed to provide support and assistance with any special needs of the
choral music program at the university.
Dr. James Shrader, chair of the music department and director of choral music at Northwestern, has used the fund to purchase a Yamaha P120 electric piano. The instrument is portable and can be moved easily around campus or taken off campus for musical productions in different venues.
Dennis Weigand attended Alva schools and graduated from Northwestern in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry. He studied medicine at the University of Oklahoma, interned at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, then completed a residency in dermatology at the OU Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) in 1967.
After serving 2 years in the U.S. Army, Weigand returned to the OUHSC for a 30-year career in teaching and practice, retiring in 2000. He was appointed professor emeritus in 2001.
A member of the Northwestern Foundation Board of Trustees, Weigand has been a singing member of the Canterbury Choral Society in Oklahoma City since 1971.
Janet Weigand attended school in Dacoma and attended Northwestern for her pre-nursing education. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing in 1961 and practiced first at Children’s Memorial Hospital. She then worked in charity medical clinics in Oklahoma City until her retirement in 2000.
