DEENA FISHER ELECTED TO HISTORICAL SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dr. Deena Fisher, dean of the Woodward campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). She will be serving on the board’s Outreach Subcommittee.
In addition to serving as dean at Woodward, Fisher teaches Oklahoma history classes as associate professor of history. She holds a master of education degree in social science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) and a doctorate in higher education administration from Oklahoma State University. Besides Northwestern, Fisher has taught at SWOSU, El Reno Community College and several high schools.
In Woodward, Fisher serves on boards and committees for Rotary Club, Woodward Industrial Foundation, Chamber of Commerce and Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum.
For several years, she has coordinated a week-long Oklahoma history summer institute for teachers and students in Enid and Woodward that is co-sponsored by OHS’ Museum of the Cherokee Strip in Enid, the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum in Woodward and Northwestern.
Fisher’s professional affiliations include the Higher Education Alumni Council of Oklahoma, National Council for Social Studies, College and University Faculty Assembly, National Social Studies Supervisors Association and Oklahoma Council of Social Studies.
Her honors and awards include a $5,000 Maycle K. Southall Scholarship from Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Women, Woodward Education Association Teacher of the Year finalist, Outstanding American History Teacher Award from Oklahoma Society of the DAR and Oklahoma Supreme Court Teacher of the Year.
