BRYAN POPE TO PRESENT SENIOR RECITAL

            Bass singer Bryan Pope of Laverne will present his senior recital at 8 p.m., Thursday, April 22, in Room 200 of the Fine Arts Building at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. A student of Aija Shrader, assistant professor of music, he will be accompanied by Charla Parker on piano. The recital is free and the public is invited to attend.

The recital will begin with selections from Handel’s Messiah. A set of art songs by Franz Liszt, in both French and German, will follow. Pope will then present English art songs by British composers John Ireland and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The recital will end with “Ella giammai m’amo,” a famous aria for bass from Verdi’s opera, Don Carlo, and “If ever I would leave you,” from Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot.

            Pope started his collegiate career at Northwestern in the fall of 1997 and since that time has been active in band, jazz ensemble, brass ensemble, trombone quartet chorale, University Singers and Phi Delta Music Society. Through those organizations, he was able to tour Washington, D.C. and St. Louis and perform with the band at the NAIA national football championships in Savannah, Tenn.

            He also has participated in National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS)  competitions and the Northwestern opera workshop productions. Pope has performed the roles of Mr. Gobineau in The Medium, the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance, Jupiter in last year’s Orpheus in the Underworld and Don Alfonso in this spring’s production of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte.

            Pope has been selected to Who’s Who Among American College Students and been named to the president’s honor roll. In 2003, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor of music education degree in instrumental music. He also was honored as one of the outstanding graduates of the Class of 2003.

            He has served as Phi Delta president, resident assistant and resident supervisor at Coronado Hall, assistant conductor of the Ranger band and a Ranger Connection instructor. Pope will complete his bachelor of music education degree in vocal music in 2004 and complete a master’s degree in secondary administration in 2005.

            He is the son of Gary and Mary Jane Pope of Laverne and Becky Pope of Duncan. He is the grandson of J.D. and Carolyn Pope of Woodward.
