ESTHER HOUGHAM TO PRESENT JUNIOR RECITAL

Esther Hougham of Carbonado, Wash., will present her junior recital at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, in Room 200 of the Fine Arts Building at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.A mezzo-soprano, Hougham will begin with a motet by Dietrich Buxtehude, “Singet den Herren ein neues Lied,” which translates into “Sing to the Lord a new song.” A group of French art songs by Claude Debussy will follow and then a group of four songs in English by British composer Herbert Howells. The recital will end with a duet from Lakmé by Delibes with soprano Kandee Hookstra and the well-known Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen.
Hougham will be accompanied by Charla Parker on the piano. She is a student of Aija Shrader, assistant professor of music.
While at Northwestern, Hougham has been on the president’s and vice-president’s honor rolls. She has been a member of the Concert Choir, University Chorale, University Singers and Northwestern Studio Singers and has served as president of Phi Delta Music Society.
Hougham has competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing collegiate auditions, placing third at the state level. A participant in the annual Evening of Song concerts and Swing Cabaret, she also has participated in opera workshop. She played one of the wards in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance and the role of Public Opinion in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. This spring, Hougham will perform the role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte (Women are like that).
