RANGER RODEO TEAM VISITS GARDEN CITY FOR THIRD RODEO OF SEASON

 

            The Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team competed this past weekend at Garden City (Kan.) Community College.

            Barry Burk, senior from Ponca City, was fifth in the long round of calf roping with a time of 9.4 seconds. He was third in the short round with 10.3 seconds and was third in the average. Jess Tierney, senior from Hermosa, S.D., tied for third in the long round at 9.3 seconds, but incurred a penalty in the short round and finished seventh in both the round and the average.

            In steer wrestling, Clay Cowan, sophomore from Highmore, S.D., tied for eighth with 4.9 seconds in the long round. He tied for fourth in the long round with a time of 5.2 seconds, which was good for a fourth-place tie in the round and sixth in the average. Laverne junior Troy Bryant won the long round at 4.0 seconds, but missed his steer in the short round.

            Buffalo freshman K.W. Lauer and Kingman, Kan., junior Tyler Garten paired in team roping to tie for eighth in the long round with 6.0 seconds. They had to use three loops in the short round that gave them a time of 16.8 seconds, good for fifth in both the round and the average.

            Also in team roping, Bartlesville junior Colt Braden and Tyler Barton of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College were fifth in the long round with a time of 5.6 seconds and missed their steer in the short round. Heath Nolte, a senior from South Coffeyville, and Tripp Johnson of Southeastern Oklahoma State University won the long round with 5.3 seconds, but also missed their steer in the short round.

            Teddi Winfrey, freshman from Plains, Kan., split second and third in the long round of breakaway roping with a time of 2.4 seconds. She was fifth in the short round with 3.8 seconds and tied for fourth in the average. Bartlesville senior Rebecca Johnson was sixth in the long round and missed her calf in the short round.

            Guymon freshman Krista Hawkins placed ninth in the long round of barrel racing, making the circuit in 13.74 seconds. She was fourth in the short round at 13.70 seconds and ended up fourth in the average. Brittany Schnee, senior from Shelby, Mont., was fifth in the long round with 13.67 seconds. She incurred a penalty in the short round for knocking over a barrel, finishing seventh in the round and seventh in the average.

            “I am really disappointed in the performances in the short round,” said coach Tim Kolb. “We didn’t draw very well and when we did, we just didn’t use it to our advantage.

            The team will next compete at the Oklahoma Panhandle State University this weekend.
