DRAIN TO DELIVER LECTURE AS PART OF MARTIN LUTHER KING OBSERVANCE
Northwestern Oklahoma State University alumna Donnita Drain will return to campus on Tuesday, Jan. 20 to deliver a lecture to students, faculty and staff as part of the school’s Martin Luther King Jr. observance.
Drain’s lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Room 109 of the Struckle Education Center.
Most people remember Drain as one of the finest women’s basketball players in Northwestern history and as a former homecoming queen. She graduated from Northwestern in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and an endorsement in biology. While attending Northwestern, she was an Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Scholar Athlete and was selected as an NAIA honorable mention All-American. Coach Drain was inducted into the Northwestern Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
After leaving Northwestern she earned a master of education administration degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Drain is in her ninth season as coach of the Langston University women’s basketball team and also has served as athletic director for women’s sports for four seasons. She is an active member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association,
Black Coaches Association and the Orange and Blue Booster Club. Drain established
Langston’s summer basketball camp as well as two other camps in western Oklahoma. She also has served as the NAIA Region VI Vice Chairperson and was named Athletic Director of the Year for Region VI.
Since going to Langston, Drain has led her Lady Lions to three national tournaments and her teams continue to be an annual contender in the Red River Athletic Conference. Langston was 20-13 during the 2001-02 season, marking the first 20-win season in 23 years. The Lady Lions finished the 2002-2003 season with a 25-9 record.
