FORMER AMBASSADOR TO TALK WITH NORTHWESTERN STUDENTS
A former United States ambassador will share his knowledge of the relationships between America and Latin America during a presentation to students at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.
Edwin G. Corr, former ambassador to Peru, Bolivia and El Salvador, will speak to Northwestern students on Wednesday, March 31, at 2 p.m. in the Ranger Room of the Student Center. Earlier that day, Corr will speak to the Alva Kiwanis Club.
Corr currently is Associate Director of the International Programs Center of the University of Oklahoma, a position he has held since 1996. From 1995 to 2001, Corr was the creator and the Director of the Energy Institute of the Americas. Prior to his administrative service at OU, Corr was the Henry Bellmon Professor of Public Service and a professor of political science.
Corr served as the United States Ambassador to Peru from 1980-81, to Bolivia from 1981-85, and to El Salvador from 1985-88. From 1978 to 1980 he was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics Matters. Corr has worked from the grass roots level with the Peace Corps and a development foundation to the pinnacle of diplomacy as a Chief of Mission in four countries. Both Republican and Democratic Party presidents appointed Corr, a career Foreign Service Officer, as an ambassador.
A sought-after speaker, he has presented at major conferences and meetings throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, and addressed civic groups and organizations. He has authored “The Political Process in Colombia” and co-authored “The Search for Security: US Grand Strategy in the 21st Century,” with Max G. Manwaring and Robert N. Dorff. Corr is fluent in Spanish and has studied French, Thai and Quechua.
