Coordinator of Ketterman Lab
Division of Nursing
Northwestern - Enid
In 2006 the Northwest AHEC pulled together a group of dedicated companies and individuals to create a learning laboratory for nursing and health care students, are nurses, and area health care workers. This group included Paul Ketterman, Integris Bass Baptist Medical Center, St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Northern Oklahoma College, and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The lab provides support to the clinical education of nursing students and health care staff in the northwestern region as well as recruitment tours for school children and clinical education opportunities for allied health and medical personnel/students in the area.
This 1376 sq. ft. facility, located on the Enid Campus of NWOSU at 2929 E. Randolph was designed for the use of faculty, staff, sponsors, and supporters. At this time we have eight manikins and more than 15 standardized patient parts available for use in teaching and evaluation scenarios. The simulated patients occupy a 3-bed hospital ward, a 4-bed hospital ward, a Labor and Delivery suite, and a multipurpose ER/ICU room. The wards can be set up as a Pediatric Unit or Adult Medical/Surgical Unit. Ketterman Simulation Laboratory is a multi-bed, multi-purpose classroom and clinical skills laboratory with simulation and other types of equipment to support health care education and recruitment. Video and computer equipment and software is provided for student use and feedback and for clinical scenarios.
Nursing students practice skills and clinical scenarios comparable to what they will encounter with patients/families in the clinical setting. Practicing in this setting is a safe environment for students to learn, make mistakes and adapt to ways to better function as a health care professional. This is also true for practicing health care professionals who use the lab for skills practice, clinical scenario practice and certification and continuing education classes. The community is served by these activities. All of these activities enhance the health and well-being of northwestern Oklahomans.
