Northwestern to play host to chili fundraiser for United Fund in Woodward

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Woodward campus will play host to the annual United Fund Frito Chili Pie Fundraiser on Oct. 14-15 from 4-7:30 p.m. in the Campus Commons Area. Big Dan’s Steakhouse will provide the chili, and members of the Northwestern-Woodward Leadership Advisory Board will provide the other “fixings.” These events are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted, and all proceeds will benefit the United Fund of Woodward.

“We, as a board, are so grateful for the opportunity to give back to this community that we hold so dear to us as students,” Katie Matthews, Mooreland senior and Woodward Leadership Advisory Board president, said.

The United Fund provides grants to 10 local organizations including: Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma, Kid's Inc., High Plains Outreach Center, Legal Aid of Oklahoma, Northwest Oklahoma Literacy Council, Panhandle Nutrition Center, Red Cross of Northwest Oklahoma, Salvation Army and the Woodward Senior Center.

“For the past six years, the students and staff at the Woodward campus have generously given their time and financial resources in support of the United Fund,” Dr. Deena Fisher, dean of the Northwestern-Woodward campus, said. “The Northwestern administration and Leadership Advisory Board believe in giving back to the community that has, in turn, been so generous in supporting our campus.”

To help raise additional funds, supporters will have the opportunity win Northwestern gift baskets and other items by purchasing tickets for $1 each or $5 for six tickets. Items include Northwestern memorabilia such as football and basketball season passes, blankets, t-shirts, hats, a movie/dinner night and gift cards to JB’s Steakhouse and Big Dan’s Steakhouse.

"We encourage everyone to join us on one or both evenings for some good food with friends and family,” Kristin Mravinec, Woodward campus coordinator, said. “We usually serve 200 students who raise approximately $800 for the United Fund, in addition, we have some great prizes donated by Northwestern and its students."

The fundraiser is made possible by Northwestern’s administrative staff and Woodward Leadership Advisory Board.
“We are thankful to our Northwestern community and the community of Woodward for showing their support through donations for the United Fund of Woodward,” Matthews said. “ It is truly a great cause that the Woodward Leadership Advisory Board is thrilled to be able to support.”
