  • Northwestern selects Matt Walter as next head football coach

    November 21, 2014 -- Northwestern Oklahoma State University has turned to one of the heroes of its 1999 national championship team to revive its football program.The University announced alumnus Matt Walter as its new head football coach at a press conference on Friday. Walter takes over the position after spending the last six years on the staff at Emporia State University, the last four as offensive coordinator.

  • Construction at Ranger Field to affect fans

    September 12, 2014 -- The ongoing construction of a new press box and fan convenience center at Ranger Field will present a few challenges for football fans of Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Alva High School during the 2014 season. The Ranger football team plays its first home game Saturday at 1 p.m. against Harding (Ark.). Construction delays and a rainy summer have pushed back the timeline for completion of the project, and use of the facility during the 2014 season appears unlikely.

  • Northwestern advances in NCAA Division II membership process

    July 11, 2014 -- Northwestern Oklahoma State University has moved one step closer to its goal of becoming a full, active member of NCAA Division II. The NCAA Division II Membership Committee today announced that Northwestern has successfully completed candidacy year two and will be granted provisional membership beginning Aug. 1. The provisional year is the last of the three-step Division II membership process.

  • Ranger Field to see new press box, upgraded public amenities; completes Vision for Victory campaign

    February 18, 2014 -- Construction on the third and final project in Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Vision for Victory Campaign for Athletics will begin early this spring. Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, said private fund raising to build a new press box at Ranger Field had reached a level where the construction process was now possible, including a major leadership gift from The Charles Morton Share Trust of Alva.

  • Northwestern to induct 2012 Sports Hall of Fame class on Jan. 28

    January 12, 2012 -- The 2012 Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Hall of Fame class will be honored at a luncheon in the Student Center Ballroom at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, and formally inducted between the women’s and men’s basketball games vs. Oklahoma City University that afternoon in Percefull Fieldhouse. The women’s game will tip off at 2 p.m., and the men’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m. The 2012 inductees include Al Hunt, football; Marlena (Elliott) Johnson, women’s basketball; Lynn Scott, football; and Slade Young, men’s basketball.

  • Ranger Rally planned to celebrate fall athletics season

    Free food, t-shirts, games and prizes will be part of the Ranger Rally, a pep rally to celebrate the fall athletics season at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Wednesday, Aug. 31.

  • Andy Carter named director of athletics at Northwestern

    Northwestern Oklahoma State University has announced the hiring of Andy Carter as the school’s Director of Athletics. Carter brings in more than 23 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, with the last 13 as the leader of an Athletics Department. He has spent more than eight years at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institution as the Director of Athletics.

  • Northwestern receives membership into Great American Conference

    The presidents of the nine member institutions of the Great American Conference have voted unanimously to offer provisional membership to Northwestern Oklahoma State University upon the school’s acceptance into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Great American Conference is comprised of nine institutions in Oklahoma and Arkansas competing at the NCAA Division II level. The conference will begin its first year of competition this fall.

  • Battisti to retire as athletic director

    In 1986, Northwestern Oklahoma State University hired a young men’s basketball coach from Minnesota to try and revive a struggling program. Most figured the young coach would have some quick success and then move on to another program. There’s no doubt Bob Battisti had some success, but he also fell in love with Northwestern and the Alva community, found his wife, and started his family.

  • Ranger men's basketball team visits Lincoln Elementary

    Members of Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Ranger men’s basketball team were the guests of Lincoln Elementary School in Alva recently. Team members, along with head coach Andrew Brown, assistant coach Shane Hansen and graduate assistant Kris Johnson, shared with the fourth and fifth graders information about the Champions of Character program within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

    A task force appointed to review the national affiliation of Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s athletic program has unanimously recommended that the institution begin an exploration of membership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

    The 2010 class of the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Hall of Fame will include Corinn Auld Allen of Yukon, Troy Brown of Clinton, Mike Mitchel of Alva, and Brock Schnebel of Oklahoma City.

    Former Northwestern Oklahoma State University students, turned doctors were on campus giving incoming student-athlete physicals. Dr. James Keeney, 1979 graduate, and Dr. Brock Schnebel, 1977 graduate, examined student-athletes last week in preparation for the new school year.
