Raquel Conway, Woodward social work senior at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, recently participated in the Oklahoma Policy Institute’s Summer Program.

The Summer Policy Institute brings together more than 50 highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students for an exciting and stimulating four-day learning experience. The institute offers participants a unique opportunity to become better informed about vital Oklahoma policy issues, network with fellow students and leaders, and prepare for their future studies and work in policy-related fields. The Institute was hosted and led by the staff of OK Policy, a Tulsa-based think-tank that produces timely and credible information, analysis, and ideas on state policy issues, guided by core commitments to the fair and adequate funding of public services and the expansion of economic prosperity for all.

Conway was chosen to attend this institute through an extensive and competitive application process aimed at selecting students with strong academic training, diverse experiences, and a clear interest in the study and practice of public policy. This year the Institute covered the current immigration crisis and the undocumented children crossing the border, Oklahoma's education system and incarceration rates in the state of Oklahoma.

“It was an amazing experience,” Conway said.  “I made lifelong friends and learned so much in the process. Meeting candidates for office and current office holders was an exciting experience.”

David Blatt, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Policy Institute said, “We were delighted to have Raquel participate in the Summer Policy Institute. Even in a group of outstanding students from across the state, Raquel distinguished herself by her intellectual curiosity, perceptive insights, and deep concern for policies that will help less fortunate Oklahomans. We are enthusiastic about the chance to have Raquel continue to be engaged in the work of Oklahoma Policy Institute.”

“I’m so thankful to the Department of Social Work for supporting my application and to the Oklahoma Policy Institute for an incredible learning experience,” Conway said.
