Northwestern scholarship drive to kick off Feb. 24

February 11, 2010

An annual event encouraging the Alva community to invest in the students of Northwestern Oklahoma State University is on the horizon. The Northwestern Foundation’s Alva Scholarship Drive is set to kick off Feb. 24 and will wrap up March 24 as the off-campus and on-campus teams tally their totals.

“There is no better investment than one made in oneself,” Mayor Arden Chaffee said. “This community is The University.”

Funds raised through the Scholarship Drive finance continuing student scholarships. In addition to fundraising, teams seek to recruit additional Millennium Club members.

“The funds raised through the Millennium Club are especially helpful to continuing students who received Alva Incentive dollars their first year at NWOSU,” Dr. Janet Cunningham, university president, said. “Being able to offer scholarship awards to outstanding students is a powerful retention tool. During these tough economic times, a scholarship could be the difference in whether a student is able to continue his or her education.”

The Foundation established the Millennium Club, a giving program dedicated to building an additional $25 million scholarship endowment over the next decade, to provide financial support for continuing students. When fully funded, the Millennium Club will provide approximately $1.25 million annually to deserving students.

In 2008-2009, more than $364,000 in scholarships and faculty chairs was awarded.

Chaffee and Dr. Mike Knedler, chairs, will lead the off-campus teams, including Dr. Troy and Liz Smith, Paul Corr and Dr. Tim Maharry, Barbara Rockenbach and Karen Linstrum, Karen Koehn and Marilyn Myers, Wes Miller and Jessie Schroeder, Jason Bryant and Rick Cunningham, Chaffee and Kathy Earnest, David Noland and Eric Schmaltz, Johnny Jones and Cunningham, Rocky Ferrell and Knedler, Rod Gourley and David Pecha, Pat Headlee and Dr. Sandra Petree, Mac and Jerrie McKinley, Don Thomas and Lizabeth Richey, Helen Thiesing and Skeeter Bird, Dr. Mike Meier and Dr. Steve Lohmann, Ed and Teresa Sutter, Deb Corr and Dr. Carole McKenzie, Sarita Simon and Patrick Harris, and Thelma Crouch and Charla Turner.
