ALVA, Okla. – The Ranger soccer team moved to 1-2 on the early season with a 2-1 win against Mid-America Christian University in their first Sooner Athletic Conference match up of the season.
Northwestern senior Ashley Guinn scored her second goal of the season to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead during the tenth minute of play. Christina Nunez and Hannah Layden were credited with the assist.
Christina Nunez found the back of the net for the first time this season after a feed from Vanessa Lopez and extended the Rangers’ lead to 2-0 with two minutes to go in the first half.
Mid-America battled back in the second half and was able to come up a goal in the 77th minute, but the Ranger defense stood strong and held them off from a possible game tying goal for the final 13 minutes.
The Evangels out shot the Rangers 19-16, with Mid-America hitting eight shots on goal to Northwestern’s six.
Ranger goalkeeper Kelsey Archer played the entire match and came up with seven saves.
Northwestern (1-2, 1-0) hosts NCAA Division II East Central University in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at the Alva Rec. Complex on Friday, Sept. 12.
