The Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo team had an excellent showing at their annual Ranger Rodeo, held Nov. 6-8 at the Woods County Fairgrounds Arena.
Northwestern had 20 team members qualify for the championship round Saturday night, with four student-athletes qualifying in two events each.
Trenton Johnson, Mound City, Kan., sophomore, tied for first in the men’s all-around competition with Jesse Jolly of Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Johnson won the steer wrestling event with a time of 8.1 seconds on two head. He also was second in the tie-down calf roping.
After three rodeos, Johnson is sitting in sixth place in both events in the Central Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
Among the women, Brooke Inlow, Oakley, Kan., senior, had the best showing at her local rodeo. She was second in the women’s all-around after placing second in goat tying and sixth in breakaway calf roping. She is second in the region in goat tying.
Northwestern competitors, their events and placings in the average are as follows:
Bareback bronc riding: Chancy Lovinggood, Lehigh junior, second; A.J. Colletti, Pueblo, Colo., senior, fifth; Chase Settle, McPherson, Kan., junior, eighth. Lovinggood is leading the region in this event.
Bull riding: Clay Cudmore, Cherokee junior, third; Kyle Cudmore, Cherokee junior, fifth. Clay Cudmore is second in the region in bull riding, while his brother is tied for 10th.
Tie-down calf roping: Johnson, second; Luke Blanton, Lamont senior, fourth; Tyler Macoubrie, Louisburg, Kan., senior, fifth. In the region, Blanton is tied for third place and Macoubrie is 10th. Also qualifyIng for the final round was Perry Dietz, Cleo Springs freshman.
Steer wrestling: Johnson, first; Kody Woodward, Dupree, S.D., sophomore, third; Colt Stearns, North Platte, Neb., senior, sixth. Woodward is second in the region in this event, with Stearns in third. Blanton also qualified for the final round.
Team roping header: Mark Miller, Stratford, Texas, senior, eighth. Cole Wilson, Kincaid, Kan., sophomore, roping with Dawson McMaster of Colby (Kan.) Community College, also qualified for the final round.
Team roping heeler: Taylor Pingry, Arkansas City, Kan., senior, eighth.
Barrel racing: Haley Nida, Alva junior, fourth; Robbie Lynn Wilson, Arthur, Neb., senior, seventh. Nida and Wilson share ninth place in the region in barrel racing.
Breakaway calf roping: Inlow, sixth; Stephanie Williams, Fairland freshman, seventh. Wilson qualified for the final round and is leading the region in this event.
Goat tying: Inlow, second; Toya Vogt, Corn sophomore, third. Vogt is fourth in the region. Morgan Blomgren, Albia, Iowa, sophomore, also qualified for the final round.
The Ranger rodeo team has finished competition for the semester. Seven rodeos will be contested in the spring, beginning with that at Kansas State University in February.
