Northwestern gears up for Homecoming

September 30, 2009

“A Century of Ranger Pride” has been selected as the theme of Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s 2009 homecoming celebration, Oct. 22-24.

The theme was devised by members of the Northwestern/Alva Homecoming Association and must be used by any club or organization entering the float, spirit sheet sign and dorm decoration contests.

Phil Prigmore, of Alva, has been selected as parade marshal for the homecoming parade.

Once again the Committee received funding from the Alva Tourism Committee to increase float prize money. Prizes for first, second and third will remain at $200, $150 and $100, respectively. Campus organizations, as well as off-campus, non-profit organizations are encouraged to build a float.

During Homecoming week, there will be a variety of events planned for students.

The Miss Cinderella Talent Show, featuring area high school seniors, is planned for Thursday, Oct. 22, with the Miss Cinderella Pageant on Friday, Oct. 23.

Also on Friday night, the Northwestern Alumni Association has planned two different reunions. “Ranger Legends” is set for alumni who graduated in the 50s, 60s and 70s. The event will begin at 8 p.m., at the VIP Supper Club, located at 3020 College Blvd.
“Ranger Rewind” is planned for Rangers who graduated from 1980-2009, and will be held at the Nite Lite from 9-11 p.m. The Nite Lite is located at 1220 Lane St.

Events on Saturday, Oct. 24, will begin at 8 a.m., with the Ranger Run on Alva’s downtown square. The annual Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. A variety of activities will continue throughout the day, and the Ranger football team will play Bacone College at 3 p.m. on Ranger Field.

Also new to the schedule this year is a Homecoming dance featuring the band Trader-Price. The dance will be held at the Woods County Fairgrounds in the Merchants’ Building from 8 p.m.-midnight.

Reserved seating for one is $12, or reserved seating for a table of eight is $100. General admission to the dance is $10. Tickets are available by contacting the Northwestern Alumni Association at (580) 327-8593 Tickets also may be purchased by contacting Homecoming Dance coordinators Joy Meier, Tena Martin or Dian Gourley. Contact Martin at (580) 829-2978 or Gourley at (580) 829-2674 to purchase tickets.

Buttons for homecoming will go on sale Oct. 5. The Homecoming Committee’s primary source of revenue comes from button sales and the Northwestern/Alva Homecoming Association greatly appreciates the support of the community.

Buttons may be purchased at Rialto, located at 516 Flynn; Radio Shack, 609 College; Great Indoors Furniture, 422 Flynn; or at the Alva Chamber of Commerce, 502 Oklahoma Blvd.

Cathy Brown, retention coordinator, is the campus button sales chair and will coordinate campus button sales. Anyone on the Alva campus wanting to purchase a button, contact Brown.
