Northwestern band members take on new leadership roles; scholarships available

April 1, 2016

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University band will be under new student leadership for the upcoming school year.

The drum major is Madison Hofen, Dacoma freshman majoring in vocal music; the woodwind section leader is Amanda Metcalf, Enid sophomore majoring in instrumental music; the brass section leader is Aaron Pierce, Alva freshman, vocal music major; and the graduate assistant and pep band director is A.J. Bohlmann, Hooker senior, instrumental music major.

Dr. Marc Decker, assistant professor fine arts and director of bands, said choosing these students was not an easy decision.

“There are a lot of great leaders in the band,” Decker said. “Just because someone wasn’t selected a title or role doesn’t mean they are not an important leader in our ensemble.”

The drum major’s responsibilities are to lead the marching band in drill and fundamentals as well as being the leader of the marching band. The section leaders run sectionals to help teach their specific sections music and drill. The graduate assistant and pep band director will select music performances, hold practices and run the pep band.

The band’s goal for the upcoming marching season is to put on musical entertainment that entices the audience to cheer louder and the players to play hard.

Participation scholarships up to $2,000 also are available for members of the band.

For more information about becoming a member of the band or scholarship opportunities contact Decker at (580) 327-8191 or by email at mddecker@nwosu.edu.
