New Staff Orientation implemented at Northwestern

January 14, 2009

Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s Staff Council held its first New Staff Orientation session Jan. 7, where new staff members learned about different aspects of the university and also became acquainted with university procedures and personnel.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University staff members attending the recent New Staff Orientation session are (left to right) Joanne Prewett, Academic Success Center director; Pam Gale, administrative assistant to the vice president for administration; Denise Bay, special events coordinator; Ruby Hibberts, maintenance; Erika Birk, university relations specialist; and Tara Hall, records/admissions assistant in registry.Similar to Northwestern’s New Faculty Orientation, relevant information for staff was used at the orientation. New staff received handouts about university activities and other inter-office related procedures, as well as the use of university logos and business office procedures.

New staff members who participated in the first New Staff Orientation were Joanne Prewett, Academic Success Center director; Pam Gale, administrative assistant to the vice president for administration; Denise Bay, special events coordinator; Ruby Hibberts, maintenance; Erika Birk, university relations specialist; and Tara Hall, records/admissions assistant in registry.

“This orientation gives employees a chance to put faces with names and services,” Rita Castleberry, loan coordinator and chair said. “Our hope will be to offer this service in January and August as most staff work on 12 month contracts, and we felt that holding an orientation twice a year would catch new employees as ‘new employees.’”

As new staff members enter Northwestern it is imperative that each individual is on the same page and understands university policies, procedures and available services. New Staff Orientation can answer questions for any concern an employee may come across.Northwestern Staff Council members are (front) Karlista Greenfield, Shannon Morris, Natalie Miller, Lisa Herning, (back) Angelia Case, Rita Castleberry and Fawn Kingkade.

Castleberry said the Council did not want new employees feeling overwhelmed and unsure of who or where to turn to for services.

“This orientation will also help the employee to be successful in his or her job and feel confident completing daily tasks,” she said. “Our hope is to familiarize new comers to the Northwestern campus, services available and those who offer them, and to make each new employee feel welcome and at ease when asking questions.”

The Council is made up of individuals from different departments on campus. Staff Council officers include Castleberry, Chair-elect Lisa Herning, library assistant; Secretary Shannon Morris, secretary/risk management coordinator. Other elected members are Natalie Miller, assistant certification officer; Angelia Case, media services technician; Karlista Greenfield, financial aid assistant; and Fawn Kingcade, assistant bursar.

“Even though I went to school at Northwestern, there are still services that I did not know were available,” Greenfield said. “As a new employee there is so much information given in the first few weeks, it’s hard to retain it all. Having someone take time and introduce services available that may not be a part of your immediate job duties was very beneficial.”
