Applied Music Studio Manual
Applied study in vocal and instrumental music provides music majors with the opportunity to
develop musical understanding and technical proficiency in a specific performance medium,
thereby allowing them to interpret representative works of past and present. This study is also
intended to provide students with a model of self-discipline necessary for success in the music
profession.
General Requirements in Applied Music
The following requirements apply to all students enrolled in any area of applied music study.
-
Academic Credit. Applied music may
be taken for one, two, or three hours credit.
-
Students enrolled in one credit hour will take one thirty-minute lesson per week.
-
Students enrolled in two credit hours will take one sixty-minute lesson per week.
-
Students enrolled in three credit hours will take one ninety-minute lesson per week.
-
Practice. Minimum requirements for
practice are as follows:

Evaluation/Grading. The final grade
for the course will be determined by the instructor's evaluation of (1) the student's progress during
the course of the semester, (2) the student's performances in studio classes and on student recitals,
(3) the student's performance in weekly lessons; (4) the student's use of the syllabus and practice
schedule; and (5) the student's performance on the final jury examinations. Criteria for the final
grade are as follows:
A final grade of "A" indicates superior work; details of musicianship
clearly evident (dynamics, phrasing, articulation,
tempo, etc); lessons well-prepared; satisfactory performance of assigned literature and technique;
satisfactory performances in studio classes, student recitals, and on the final jury, as required
above.
A final grade of "B" indicates above-average work; some details of musicianship evident, but
not consistent; lessons
generally well-prepared; satisfactory performance of assigned literature and technique; satisfactory
performance in studio classes, student recitals, and on the final jury, as required above.
A final grade of "C" indicates average work; details of musicianship generally lacking, but
notes and rhythms performed
correctly; lessons occasionally unprepared; less than satisfactory performance of assigned
literature and technique; less than satisfactory performance in studio classes, student recitals, and
on the final jury, as required above.
A final grade of "D" indicates below-average work; no sense of musicianship; notes and
rhythms performed incorrectly;
lessons are generally unprepared; less than satisfactory performance of assigned literature and
technique; less than satisfactory performance in studio classes, student recitals, and on the final
jury, as required above.
A final grade of "F" indicates failure; no evidence of preparation in weekly lessons; no sense
of continuity; less than
satisfactory performance of assigned literature and technique; less than satisfactory performance
in studio classes, student recitals, and on the final jury, as required above.
-
Attendance. The student is
responsible for notifying the instructor in advance when an absence is anticipated.
Make-up lessons can be scheduled only when an absence is due to (1) the student's illness, (2) a death in the family, or (3) a similar extenuating circumstance.
Student's work
schedules, blood donations, doctor's appointments, over-sleeping, and the like are insufficient
reasons to cancel a lesson. The student should notify the instructor of an impending
absence no later than 8:00 a.m. on the day of the lesson. If the student misses a lesson for a
spurious reason or without notifying the instructor, an absence will be recorded and there will be
no make-up lesson. If the instructor must miss a lesson, make-up time will be made available to
the student. In any event, make-up lessons are subject to the availability of the
schedule--make-up lessons must be scheduled prior to the next regular lesson--otherwise an
absence will be recorded.
-
Students With Disabilities. Any student
needing academic accommodations for a physical, mental, or learning disability should contact the
Disabled Student Services Coordinator (room FA 117) or faculty member personally,
within the first two weeks of the semester so that appropriate accommodations can
be arranged.
-
Student Recital. Concurrent
enrollment in Student Recital is required of each student enrolled in applied music. One
performance for each hour of credit in the major performance area is required of each student
enrolled in applied music.
Each applied instructor will have additional sections of the
Applied Music Studio
Manual for his or her students. Read each section carefully.
