The Miss Northwestern Pageant for Northwestern Oklahoma State University was selected as Local Pageant of the Year during Miss Oklahoma Pageant activities last week in Tulsa. The award was presented to Rachel Stewart, executive director of the local pageant, at the annual directors and field directors meeting Friday, June 6, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Recognition of the award also was given during the final night of the Miss Oklahoma Pageant from the stage of the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
Selection of this award is made by the Miss Oklahoma Pageant Board. Throughout the year, various reports and documentation must be submitted by a local pageant to Miss Oklahoma Executive Director Kay Alexander.
“Rachel does an awesome job and is very deserving,” Alexander said.
“It is an honor to receive this award,” Stewart said. “Our pageant board works very hard to produce a high-quality pageant experience for the Miss and Teen contestants, as well as a fun show for those in attendance.”
The Miss Northwestern Board members include Chesnei Thomas, retention coordinator and director of the Teen pageant; Kimberly Weast, professor of theatre; Haley Smith, university relations specialist; Allison Zimmerman, Foundation/Alumni Association communications and marketing manager; Melissa Turco, Title III academic adviser; Alica Hall, coordinator of printing services; Lizabeth Richey and Tena Martin, both community members.
“I could not do it without these wonderful and talented individuals and the support of Northwestern’s President, Dr. Janet Cunningham, and the senior staff,” Stewart said. “It is truly a team effort.”

Stewart also expressed appreciation to Northwestern’s theater students who provide their time and support.
The Miss Northwestern Pageant offers scholarship opportunities to those who compete and even more to the winners.
“The scholarship opportunities from the local, state to national levels are unbelievable,” Stewart said.
The Miss Northwestern Pageant is a local level pageant in the Miss America system. The winner at the local level proceeds to the state pageant, Miss Oklahoma.
Alex Smith, Mooreland freshman; Ashley Tucker of Fairview; and Riley Ferguson of Mooreland are the reigning Miss Northwestern, Miss Northwestern’s Outstanding Teen and Miss Northwestern Star, respectively, all competed in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant last week.
“I am elated that the Miss Northwestern Pageant was selected Local Pageant of the Year!” Smith said. “We had such a wonderful experience at Miss Oklahoma, and it has been an honor to serve as Miss Northwestern.”
“Alex, Ashley and Riley represented Northwestern with beauty, poise and grace in the pageant,” Stewart said.
The next Miss Northwestern and Miss Northwestern’s Outstanding Teen pageants are scheduled for Nov. 2 in Northwestern’s Herod Hall Auditorium.
