WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The Northwestern Oklahoma State University men's rodeo team scored 320 points en route to a third-place finish at Southwestern Oklahoma State University this past weekend. The women's team finished fifth scoring 135 points. Nineteen schools participated in the rodeo.
Dustin Searcy and Cale Markham (Coffeyville) were second to teammates Ethan McDowell and Brice Buzzard after the long round, but Searcy and Markham finished the short round in 9.9 seconds to take home the win.
McDowell and Buzzard's short round time was 11.2 after finishing in 6.4 seconds in the short round. Their average time of 17.6 seconds fell just short of Searcy and Markham's 16.9 seconds.
Collin Domer roped with Ryan Domer (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M) and the pair finished third overall after finishing third in the short round with a time of 20.7 seconds. Their long round time was 10.8 seconds
Dusta Kimzey added 115 points to Northwestern's score with her second place finish in the goat tying. She sat in fourth after the long round tying her goat in 8.3 seconds. Kimzey came back in the short round with a time of 8.1 seconds, good for third in the round.
Lauren Barnes and Megan White each recorded times of 8.7 seconds in the short round and finished tied for sixth overall.
Cody Burkholder tied for the win in the saddle bronc with a total score of 144 points. He finished fourth in the long round scoring 67. Burkholder won the short round scoring 77, the highest of any round from any individual in the event.
Will Howell dominated the short round of the tie down leading him to the win with an overall time of 21.1 seconds. His run of 10.1 seconds was 4.1 seconds better than everyone else in the round, and his overall time of 21.1 was 4.5 seconds better than the next best time.
Northwestern had three placers in the break away. Kesley Pontius and Shelby Carpenter each finished tied for third while Karly Benzi finished tied for fifth.
Pontius and Carpenter each finished the long round in 3.2 seconds but had no times in the short round. Only the first and second place finishers recorded a time in the short round making the long round time good enough for third.
Benzi finished tied for fifth and had a long round time of 3.5 seconds.
Alexis Allen finished fourth in barrel racing placing third in the long round in 17.38, just .04 seconds out of second place. Her time of 17.55 seconds in the short round was fifth.
