Ten high school students were on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus at the end of May for a summer academy titled “Mathematics Technology: An Applications Paradigm.” The academy is sponsored by a grant from ConocoPhillips.

The academy featured hands-on use of Texas Instruments graphical calculators and mathematical computer packages such as Derive and Mathematica.

In addition to laboratory work, the students visited businesses and facilities such as the Cargill Salt Plant near Freedom, Vance Air Force Base in Enid, a wind farm north of Woodward and ConocoPhillips in Ponca City, and to the Great Salt Plains State Park to discover how industry applies mathematical concepts. At Vance AFB, the students were allowed to operate flight simulators.

Leisure/fun activities included swimming, bowling, pizza party, cookout and visit to Alabaster Caverns State Park.

Dr. Tim Maharry, chair of the mathematics and computer science department, was the director of the academy. He was assisted by Dr. Sheila Brintnall, associate professor of mathematics; Billy Stewart, professor emeritus of mathematics; Dena Walker, instructor of mathematics; Scott Cline of Covington, a May graduate majoring in mathematics education, and Kelli Krows, Seiling senior, majoring in mathematics education.

Students participating included Shauna Guyle from South Barber High School; Shelby Nottingham, Rush Springs High School; Serena Kilian, Medford High School; Matthew Chuning, Barnsdall High School; Ryan Sutton and Jacquelynn Miller, Oxford High School; Brandon Huddleston, Chaparrall High School; Anthony Williams, Kingman High School; Kyle Karinshak, Lawton Academy; and Macolm Diveley, Ponca City High School.
