Each summer, the NWOSU Math Department hosts a Summer Academy for Mathematics, Science, and Multidisciplinary Studies. This program is co-sponsored by the NWOSU Math Department and through a grant from ConocoPhillips.  The Academy is a week long academy at the end of May in which high school students are introduced to a variety of mathematics technology.  The Math Academy is organized by Northwestern faculty members Dr. Sheila Brintnall, Mr. Billy Stewart, and Dr. Tim Maharry.

The use of technology in high schools, colleges and universities is rapidly expanding. Students without a working knowledge of current technology will be at a severe disadvantage when competing with those who possess these skills. It is the goal of this Academy to give outstanding high school students the opportunity to have hands-on experience using graphing calculators and mathematical computer software.

What is Mathematics Technology: An Applications Paradigm?

• You'll jump into a world of equations and calculations during this one-week residential academy. While involved in classroom and laboratory work, you'll enhance your knowledge of mathematics with hands-on use of the Texas Instruments TI-92™ graphical calculator and Derive™ and Mathematica™, two of the most powerful mathematical computer packages available. You will use your new-found skills to solve real-world problems. Through a field trips to Vance Air Base in Enid, Oklahoma, the Byron State Fish Hatchery near Byron, Oklahoma, and the Cargill Salt plant near Freedom, Oklahoma, you'll discover how various industries apply mathematical concepts. Recreational activities will include swimming, a pizza party, a movie, a visit to the Great Salt Plains, and a cookout at Alabaster Caverns State Park.

Who Pays?

• Lodging, meals, tuition, and recreation costs are all paid for through a generous grant from ConocoPhillips and through support from the Northwestern Mathematics Department. 

How do I Apply?
