Mass communication students from Northwestern Oklahoma State University have received another hand of recognition for their work in newspaper, television reporting and newscasts. This time, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has recognized students by presenting them with the Mark of Excellence Awards.
These awards are offered for print, radio, television and online categories. The contest is open to college or university students who were currently enrolled and studying for an academic degree in 2009.
This year, NWTV7 received second place in the overall newscast category. On-air personalities include Cali Crissup, Helena freshman; Becky Burke, Oilton junior;

Xin Xin Liu, China junior; Joe Perez, Alva junior; Austin Sterling, Kiowa junior; and Ashton Ghaemi, Broken Arrow senior.
Ghaemi also was recognized for her newspaper column “Stripped: The Real Me Is…” She received third place in general column writing and submitted two examples of her column.
Liu received third place for general TV reporting.
Northwestern instructors of mass communication Melanie Wilderman, Northwestern News adviser, and Ted Satterfield, KNSU radio adviser, accepted these awards on behalf of the students while they were in attendance at the annual SPJ Regional Conference in Austin.
