ALVA, Okla. - The Northwestern Oklahoma State University baseball team used dominant pitching to cruise past McPherson College sweeping a doubleheader 11-1 and 4-0 at Myers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Jason Martyn (2-0) threw five innings giving up just one run on three hits while fanning nine Bulldogs. The junior transfer was the beneficiary of some early as the Rangers (4-2) put together a five-run first inning.
Martyn gave up his only run of the game in the first inning, but the offense erased the deficit quickly. Trevor Long tripled home three runs after Jarad Moore, Wes Brorsen and Camilo Baldelomar all singled to start the game. Brorsen singled home Moore after a wild pitch and Patrick Johnson plated Long to make it 5-0.
The top of the order was at it again in the second. With one out, Brorsen was hit by a pitch and Baldelomar and Flores followed Brorsen with singles. Flores' single scored a run while Johnson got his second RBI of the game to make it 8-1.
Martyn continued to cruise giving up just one hit during the remainder of his stint. The Rangers added three more in the third with the big blow coming off the bat of Zach Apotheker who hit a two-run double to make it 11-1.
Michael Figueiredo pitched the final two innings for NWOSU.
Head coach Ryan Bay got his second consecutive dominant outing of the day on the mound. Clay Thomas didn't look like a pitcher two starts off of Tommy John surgery. The junior fired a complete game one-hitter taking a no-hitter in to the seventh inning to lead the Rangers to a 4-0 win.
Thomas fanned 13 hitters. He retired 18 consecutive hitters after hitting the first batter of the game. A single in the seventh inning broke up Thomas' no-hit bid.
Jose Maysonet and George Mendoza each had RBI singles in the second inning to give Bay's bunch the lead in the second inning. George Flores RBI single plated Baldelomar and Johnson's third RBI of the day came on a single to plate Flores.
Jarad Moore had three hits in the lead off spot for the Rangers. The NWOSU pitching staff has shutout opponents twice and given up one run in another game on the young season.
The Rangers will look for a sweep over the Bulldogs with a doubleheader scheduled for noon tomorrow.
Box Score will be available later.
