Lambda Iota Tau isĀ an national literary honor society for literature majors and minors. The three Greek letters, L I T, form the acronym for the motto of the society, Logos Idean Telei, which means "The word gives form to the idea."

Members of LIT are majors or minors in literature, regardless of the language in which that literature is written. Undergraduates must be in the upper thirty-five percent of their class in cumulative grade average and have attained at least a full B average in at least twelve semester credit hours or eighteen term hours of literature and all prerequisites thereto. Graduate students must have completed one semester or term with an A- average. All members must present an initiation paper on a literary topic or literary project of a creative nature.

Lambda Iota Tau Honor Cord

Membership is by invitation, based on application from the national organization for LIT. Qualifications require the following: student must be a major or minor in literature, be in the upper thirty-five percent of his/her, have a 3.0 GPA in 12 credit hours of literature,  present an original research composition or creative work at initiation.
