WICHITA, Kan. - The Northwestern Oklahoma State University softball team split a pair of games at the Friends Tournament on Saturday morning. The Lady Rangers fell to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 9-6 and defeated Morningside 10-0 in five innings in their second game of the day.
Game One - Box Score
The Lady Rangers (4-4, 0-2 SAC) scored the first two runs of the game before Briar Cliff broke it open with nine unanswered runs over the next three innings.
Jasmine Braxton led off the game with a single and Cheyenne Terry's triple drove her home to make the game 1-0. Seibel's groundout plated Braxton and the Lady Rangers had a short-lived 2-0 lead.
The Chargers came back with two in the first, five in the second and two more in the third to put Northwestern in a deep hole.
The Lady Rangers did their best to dig out of the hole scoring four times in the fifth inning. Braxton walked and Terry and Monique Zevada reached on errors to load the bases with no one out. Seibel hit a sacrifice fly to left to make the game 9-3 and Alyssa Taylor put a charge in to one for a three-run homer to make the game 9-6.
The score remained the same until the seventh inning when Terry's second hit of the game started a late rally. The rally was killed after Terry was thrown out at the plate on Zevada's single for the second out of the inning.
Taylor added two hits for the Lady Rangers.
Game Two - Box Score
Northwestern charged their bats for game two and received a dominant pitching performance from Kellie Mason, who threw a complete game, one-hit shutout while fanning eight Morningside hitters en route to a 10-0 five inning win..
The Lady Rangers scored once in the second, three times in the third and six times in the fourth to win 10-0 in five innings.
Taylor's second homer of the day gave the Lady Rangers a 1-0 lead. Seibel followed Taylor's lead in the next inning. After Terry and Bourdon singled, she crushed a ball far over the right field fence to extend NWOSU's lead to 4-0.
The Lady Rangers put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth inning. Kylee Wilson and Braxton singled to lead off the frame. Bourdon plated two runs with a double and Seibel's second hit of the game was a double scoring Bourdon to make it 7-0.
Monique Zevada's three-run bomb put the Lady Rangers up 10-0 and in contention to end the game by the run rule.
Mason assured the Lady Rangers of an early trip home by fanning five of the final six batters.
Zevada, Taylor, Seibel, Bourdon and Braxton all had two hits in the game.
The Lady Rangers will play three games tomorrow to conclude the Friends Tournament. NWOSU will face Bethany at 9:30 a.m., McPherson at 11:30 a.m. and Bethel at 1:30 p.m.
