SHAWNEE, Okla. (10-17-11) – The Sooner Athletic Conference coaches have picked the Northwestern Oklahoma State University women’s basketball team to finish in 11th place, the league announced on Monday.
Already considered to play in one of the top women’s basketball conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, first year head coach Stephanie Shaw is faced with the chore of proving her league counterparts wrong.
The Lady Rangers will face three NCAA Div. II teams in their first six games of the year, including a trip to take on rival Southwestern Oklahoma State on Nov. 8, after opening their season the previous weekend at the Baker (Kan.) Classic.
“We are looking forward to our non-conference schedule,” said Shaw. “We believe we have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the SAC.”
“Playing four Div. II teams in non-conference play and having zero home games before conference, will only prepare us for our conference schedule.”
Northwestern, 10-17 overall and 6-16 in SAC play last season, will have one last exhibition game at Div. II Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Nov. 19 before beginning conference action on Nov. 21 against Oklahoma Christian.
Shaw’s former employer, Oklahoma City, was picked by the SAC coaches to win the conference regular season, followed by Southern Nazarene and Lubbock Christian. Rogers State was tabbed to finish fourth, while John Brown and Wayland Baptist tied to round out the top five.
