Lady Ranger defense stands strong in non-conference victory

WICHITA, Kan. (11-14-11) — Audrey Richmond finished with 19 points for the third time in five regular season games as the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Rangers picked up a blowout victory over Friends (Kan.), 80-52.

Northwestern finishes their non-conference regular season schedule with a 3-2 record. On Saturday, they will travel to Hays, Kan., for an exhibition contest with Fort Hays State at 7 p.m.

The Lady Rangers will begin the conference portion of their schedule at home on Monday as they host Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m.

Entering the contest on Monday evening, Falcon Abby Fawcett was by far the leading scoring of a talented Friends team, scoring just over 20 points a game. However, the Lady Ranger defense stuck to their game plan, only allowing Fawcett to take four shots from the field, finishing with just eight points.

Northwestern only led the Falcons by six heading into the locker room at halftime, 32-26. In the second half, the Lady Rangers began to click on all cylinders, shooting 55-percent from the floor, including 5-for-8 from three-point range.

Of her total output in the contest, Richmond was deadly from long range, knocking down four three-pointers.

Penetration wasn’t a problem, as the other two Lady Rangers finishing in double figures, Taylytha Williams and Macy Gibson, were both very efficient from the floor. Williams was 5-for-7 from the floor with 15 points and Gibson hit 6-of-8 shots for her total of 12.

Balanced work on the class has been a stable of Lady Ranger basketball early this season, and the contest in Wichita wasn’t any different. Despite no Lady Rangers pulling in more than six of their total 45 boards, they still outrebounded the home team by 10.

Northwestern has now won 6-of-7 games against a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent since the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
