Homecoming Art Exhibition to be first event planned for art program

August 3, 2011

A Homecoming Art Exhibition featuring artwork from Northwestern Oklahoma State University students, employees, alumni and friends of the university will be displayed in the Graceful Art Center in downtown Alva on Friday, Sept. 30, through Oct. 7. Deadline to submit artwork is Sept. 26.

An opening reception has been planned for Sept. 30 from 7-8 p.m. The Graceful Art Center will be open on Homecoming morning, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will run for one week and close on Oct. 7.

Brandice Guerra, assistant professor of art, said this exhibition is made possible through the gracious donations to Northwestern from the Wisdom Family Foundation to reinstate the art program.

“I wanted to have an exhibition early in the school year that would be unreservedly celebratory in nature,” Guerra said.

“The Homecoming Exhibition is intended to herald the reinstatement of an official presence of the visual arts on campus and to display the fruits of Northwestern creativity in a way that will be readily accessed by the campus and Alva communities.”

To submit art work for consideration, please send a CD with clear, focused images in JPEG or PDF format. Along with the images, please include a Microsoft Word file, PDF file, or a printed page with the following information for each piece: name of artist, title of work, year completed, size in inches and medium. Images must be submitted on a CD and be no larger than five megabytes. Also, JPG files should be formatted at 300 dpi with all files being labeled with the title of the work.

Artwork may be submitted online at www.nwosu.edu/homecoming-art-exhibition-entry-form. The self-explanatory online form includes a place to name entry, input the year completed, enter medium and dimensions and upload artwork. Online submissions should be no larger than two megabytes, and JPG files should be formatted at 200 dpi with all files being labeled with the title of the work. Artists are encouraged to use this online form as a means to submit artwork.

CDs also can be mailed to: Brandice Guerra, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Jesse Dunn Art Annex 326B, 709 Oklahoma Blvd., Alva, OK 73717.

All work accepted into the show must be ready to hang or display. Submissions from faculty, staff and alumni should be received by Sept. 1. Students will have until Sept. 15, to submit work for consideration.
Artists invited to exhibit will be notified by Sept. 20, and accepted work should arrive to campus no later than Sept. 26.

Exhibitors are responsible for shipping and return shipping of work. Local artists may arrange to pick up their artwork at the close of the exhibition. Contact Guerra at (580) 327-8108 or beguerra@nwosu.edu with questions.

”I'm very grateful for the opportunity to exhibit the work in the new Graceful Art Center downtown as we will be in a prime location to welcome guests during the festivities,” Guerra said.

“I want to encourage anyone who might be on the south side of the square on Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 1) to drop in for a visit.”
