Brandice Guerra hangs art pieces in the new Graceful Arts Center in downtown Alva in preparation for Friday’s opening reception from 7 to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
A Northwestern Oklahoma State University Homecoming Art Exhibition showing more than 40 pieces of art by more than 20 artists will be the first event in the new Graceful Arts Center in downtown Alva. The free show opens Friday with a reception for artists and the public from 7 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The exhibition will hang for one week through Oct. 7 in the gallery at 523 Barnes on the south side of the downtown square. The gallery will be open Homecoming Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and during the week, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“The show is a celebration of the rebirth of the studio art program at Northwestern and of the establishment of a professional art gallery on the square,” said Brandice Guerra, assistant professor of art at Northwestern. “All of this was made possible through generous donations by the Wisdom Family Foundation.”
Guerra said that submissions in this show have come from faculty, staff, alumni, students and friends of Northwestern.
“We have a wide range of work from artists at various stages of their careers,” Guerra said. “We have painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and textile work in the exhibition.”
The exhibit has no admission charge, and there will be an opportunity to meet the artists and ask questions.
The art exhibit will close the same evening as another event takes place in the Center.
Northwestern’s Department of English, Foreign Language and Humanities will play host to a Poetry Reading on Oct. 7 as part of the Center’s "First Friday Art Walk."
Dr. Amy Hall, assistant professor of English, and three of her students will be sharing some of their art in words. The poetry reading will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and include readings from Sheldon Stout, Alva sophomore; Keith Barefield Jr., Alva senior; and Jordan Lyles, Sapulpa freshman.
There will be a few minutes at the end of each evening for open mic where anyone who wishes to read a single work is welcome to perform.
