Dr. Jerry Gustafson is NWOSU’s senior professor of Business. Dr. Gustafson completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1984) with a 4.0 GPA. He earned a Master of Art in Teaching (MAT) from the University of Nebraska-Omaha (1979). His BA in Mathematics and Education was awarded from the University of Northern Iowa-Cedar Falls (1972).
At NWOSU, Dr. Gustafson teaches Personal Finance, Investments, Real Estate, Business Risk Management and Insurance, General Business: Business Math, Leadership in Business and Entrepreneur Seminar. The Entrepreneurship class is held each spring semester. This class brings in entrepreneurs and small business owners from across the country to share their personal insights and experiences with students who must then analyze entrepreneurial motivations, risks, and opportunities.
Research & Presentations:
Investment systems and trading complex stock option strategies are two of Dr. Gustafson’s research areas. He is a frequent speaker at the annual conference of the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines. His most recent presentation was given in Dallas (2014) entitled “An Analysis of the Trading of Short Bull Put Vertical Credit Spreads Using LEAPS.” Other presentations include: “Buy and Hold Is Great If You Know How to Time the Market!” (Orlando, FL., 2013), and “An Analysis of Gamma Risk in the Trading of Bull Put Spreads” (Memphis, TN., 2011). Additional presentations include: “An Analysis of Theta Decay in the Trading of Iron Condors” (Orlando, FL., 2011), “An Analysis of Vega in the Trading of Short LEAPS Puts” (Hays, KS., 2010), and “An Analysis of the Swing Trading of Short LEAPS puts” (Dallas, TX., 2010).
Dr. Gustafson’s professional experiences range from avid stock-trading to wedding photography. Dr. Gustafson is a licensed Level IV stock options trader, the highest rating for a licensed option trader. He invests in residential and commercial investment properties, and serves as a landlord to over 50 tenants. He is CEO of an online western wear and boot retailer (Bestboots.com), as well as a professional photographer for weddings and other personal events(Love Wedding Photography). Oklahoma has recognized Dr. Gustafson for his dedication to his students and his teaching efforts by awarding him the Oklahoma Excellence in Teaching Award and the Oklahoma Outstanding Professor’s Award.
Membership & Committees:
Dr. Gustafson is the Director of The Widow’s Purse, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and supporting widows with their finances. He is also the Chairman of a local church committee, and an instrumentalist in the Enid Community Band and the Enid Community Jazz Band. At NWOSU, Dr. Gustafson chairs the Development Committee for the Division of Business and is a member of the Service Learning Committee.
