Northwestern Foundation Release
Athletes who played on Newby Field from 1930 to 1968 are invited to witness the unveiling of a marker identifying the former site of the field Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. A stone monument and bronze plaque will be dedicated just outside the north entrance of the J.R. Holder Wellness Center on the campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.
The dedication of the stone monument is part of a memorial project recognizing W. D. Newby and the field named in his honor. The ceremony will also include the unveiling of a timeline, complete with pictures of Newby and Newby Field, which will hang in the Wellness Center, and a plaque on the Newby Field ticket booth, which pays tribute to the Northwestern athletes who once played there.
The ceremony is open to the public. A reception will follow before the Rangers take on Southern Oregon University at 1 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.
A display celebrating Newby’s life and commemorating Saturday’s event is available to view in the J.W. Martin Library Tuesday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
