Nov. 8, 2010

Northwestern Foundation Release

Athletes who played on Newby Field from 1930 to 1968 are invited to witness the unveiling of a marker identifying the former site of the field Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. A stone monument and bronze plaque will be dedicated just outside the north entrance of the J.R. The dedication of the stone monument is part of a memorial project recognizing W. D. Newby and the field named in his honor. The ceremony will also include the unveiling of a timeline, complete with pictures of Newby and Newby Field, which will hang in the Wellness Center, and a plaque on the Newby Field ticket booth, which pays tribute to the Northwestern athletes who once played there.

The ceremony is open to the public. A reception will follow before the Rangers take on Southern Oregon University at 1 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.

A display celebrating Newby’s life and commemorating Saturday’s event is available to view in the J.W. Martin Library Tuesday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
