Five Northwestern Oklahoma State University students will compete Oct. 31 for the Miss Northwestern title during the Miss Northwestern and Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant.

The pageant will begin at 4 p.m. in Herod Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought before the pageant in several Alva locations including laDEEda, Holder Drug, the Northwestern Foundation Office and Alva Chamber of Commerce.

Competing this year are Shaelyn Brinson, Audra Halliburton, Hayley Luis, Carmen Sander and Alyssa Troy.

Brinson is a freshman psychology major from Hennessey. She is a member of the Northwestern Concert Choir, Choral Choir and Phi Delta sorority. For her talent, Brinson will perform the song “Show Me” from the 1964 musical “My Fair Lady.” Her platform is “How Bullying Affects Self-Esteem.” She is the daughter of Deborah and Rex Matthews and Bret Brinson.

Halliburton, Gage junior, is majoring in elementary education. She will promote “Better Care for the Elderly.” She is involved in Northwestern Student Ambassadors, Student Government Association and Student Oklahoma Education Association. Halliburton will perform a musical interpretation of “Honey Bun” from the Broadway musical “South Pacific.” She is the daughter of Randy and Lea Ann Halliburton.

Luis, sophomore, will perform a hip hop dance to “Club Can’t Even Handle Me Right Now” for her talent. The Newkirk native is a nursing major whose platform is “The Next Step: Preparing for Life after High School.” Luis is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Alpha Sigma Alpha. She also is a member of the Northwestern women’s basketball team. She is the daughter of Gary and Jennifer Luis.

Seiling freshman and biology major, Sander will sing Natalie Cole’s “Orange Colored Sky” for her talent. Her platform is “A Cyber-Safe Society.” She is a member of the President’s Leadership Class, Student Government Association, Math Club, Biology Club, Medical Science Club and Chemistry Club. She is the daughter of Kyle and Helen Sander.

Troy is a pre-med junior from Woodward. Her platform is “Childhood Obesity.” For her talent, she will perform a lyrical dance to a rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed by Leann Rimes. Troy hopes to become a dental hygienist. She is the daughter of Daniel and Denise Troy.
