The Enid Symphony Orchestra, along with the Northwestern Concert Choir and pianist Dr. Ling-Yu Kan, will perform in Herod Hall Auditorium at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva on Monday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m.
The Enid Symphony is under the direction of Douglas Newell, whose talents have impacted the cultural life of Oklahoma since 1983. Maestro Newell is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and the New England Conservatory of Music. He completed special studies in music at the Governor’s School of North Carolina and in orchestral conducting at the Aspen Music School.
Maestro Newell’s work with the Enid Symphony Orchestra has been recognized by the State of Oklahoma and received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from the State. Other awards include the Oklahoma Association of Symphony Orchestras Award of Excellence and two Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce Civic Improvement Awards.
Pianist Dr. Ling-Yu (Alice) Kan, assistant professor of music and director of keyboard studies at Northwestern, will join the Symphony for a performance of the Piano Concerto in f minor by Frederic Chopin.
Also joining the symphony will be the the Northwestern Concert Choir. Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, chair of the Department of Fine Arts and director of choral and vocal studies, the Northwestern Concert Choir is comprised of a variety of Northwestern students. It is a large mixed chorus that performs a varied selection of sacred and secular choral literature from all historical periods. Membership is by audition, but is open to all who wish to sing. The choir will join the symphony for a performance of The Testament of Freedom by Randal Thompson.
